Chapter 24

“Always turns my stomach,” Scott says quietly, as he enters my suite later. We’d stayed as long as we had to, then I’d left first knowing he’d be following soon after.

I don’t have to ask what he’s referring to. “Yeah. Same. Never get used to it.” My brow creases. “Sometimes I wonder if what I am affects my reaction, you know?”

Scott huffs. “That’s got nothing to do with it.” He walks into my bathroom, I hear water splashing in the sink. When he comes out, he’s rubbing his face with a towel. “I fuckin’ threw up, Josh. Went around the back of the storage shed, couldn’t hold it in any longer. And I wasn’t the only fuckin’ one.”

My eyebrows rise.

“Between you and me, Brother?”

I narrow my eyes, why does he even have to ask?

He gives it a moment, then nods. “Blade.”

Blade? The enforcer? He lives for this shit, doesn’t he? Relishes the torture he inflicts. That he’s made physically sick by the work he’s asked to do for the club puts a different slant on things, and it makes me start to see him in a different light.

“He doesn’t want anyone to know, Josh.”

I can understand that.

“What he did,” Lady continues. “What we did.” He shudders. “That was some sick shit.”

“They deserved it.” Snake and Poke couldn’t have lived. Their deaths made an example to anyone else who was thinking of betraying the club.

“Deserved to die, yes,” he confirms, “but having that back patch burned off first?” I pat the bed; he comes to sit beside me. “Josh, you know you worry about being turned out of the club? Do you reckon they’d do that to us? Is that why you’re so careful about us not coming out?”

I rub my hand over my chin. “Fuck knows. I’d have said no.” I think for a moment, remembering that thought I’d had while sitting at the bar that afternoon with Beef. “This club is as het as they can be. For all I know, they could have a case of gay panic.” I tilt my head, waiting for his nod, seeing by the narrowing of his eyes he’s already getting where I’m coming from. “Fuck, Scott. If most of the states still permit the gay panic defence as a plea toward mitigating or commuting a sentence for murder, let alone violence, what might it mean to an MC?”

“Most lawyers advise against using it. And even judges are against it being a valid excuse for a hate crime.”

“We’re not in a court of law, Brother. We’re in an outlaw motorcycle club.” My words seem to hang in the air.

Scott bites his lip, then sucks it into his mouth. “The other traitors were just told to get their tats inked out. Would our crime warrant our patches being burned off? Or killing us?” He breathes out a breath. “Do we really think so little of the men we call brothers that they’d be so threatened by what we are?”

“We’re hiding from them, lying to them.
